Your School, Your Say

Student voice starts with you

ISSU currently supports 602 member schools and their student councils. We want all student councils to be empowered and involved in decision making. To ensure your issues are being heard not only in your school but at a national, regional and international level ensure your schools is a member of ISSU.

  • Under the Education Act, 1998 students are to be assisted when setting up a student council

  • The purpose is defined as ‘A student council shall promote the interests of the school and the involvement of students in the affairs of the school, in co-operation with the board, parents and teachers.’ under the Education Act.

  • Your student council exists to be the democratic student voice in your school, ensuring that the students in that school are being heard. Under the UN Declaration on the Rights of the Child

The first step is ensuring your student council elections are open, democratic and transparent. Students should be elected by their peers, not selected by anyone other than their fellow students. If needed check your student council constitution for the election process, if it’s not outlined the council should add in a process.
